HELL, SOME FACTS FROM THE BIBLE!

We live in an age when most churches and Christians no longer believe in hell. Yet the Lord Jesus spoke more of it then heaven. Today we speak more of heaven and less of hell. In this sermon outline we are using mostly the words of Jesus in sharing what hell is like. Hell that was, hell that is now and hell what it is going to yet be in the future. If you in any way abate the doctrine of hell, it will abate your zeal. R.A. Torrey

- Luke 16:19-31 (KJV) 19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. 27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: 28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

I. The rich man and the beggar.
  A. Jesus tells of a true example.
  B. This scripture reading shows us much of the description of hell.

II. First this was hell and Paradise before the resurrection of Christ.
  A. One side was Paradise where Lazarus was.
    1. A gulf separated him from the rich man in torment.

III. When Christ arose after preaching to those in Paradise He took them with Him and hell was enlarged.
- 1 Peter 3:19 (KJV) By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
  A. When Jesus rose from the dead, Paradise was no long located across from hell.
  - Ephesians 4:8-9 (KJV) 8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
  B. Hell was enlarged when Jesus took captives from Paradise.
  - Isaiah 5:14 (KJV) Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.
  C. This is where hell is today.
  D. Saints are with the Lord!
    1. When a saint dies he now goes to be with the Lord. Philippians 1:21 (KJV) For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
    - 2 Corinthians 5:8 (KJV) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

IV. Hell will change one more time and become the Lake of Fire.
- Revelation 20:14-15 (KJV) 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
  A. It does not ever change again as it will last forever.
    1. This is the final abode of the devil, fallen angels and those who have rejected Christ. Rev 20:10 (KJV) And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

V. Hell was not made for Man.
- Matt 25:41 (KJV) Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
  A. Hell was prepared for the devil and his angels.
    1. The wicked will be cast with the devil on that last day.
    - Psalms 9:17 (KJV) The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.
  B. Heaven was prepared for Man.
  - John 14:2-3 (KJV) 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

VI. I believe the worst punishment of hell will be remembering the times they heard and rejected Christ.
A. I believe that the sin against the Holy Spirit is the rejection of the Lord.
The most dreadful torment of the lost, in fact that which constitutes their state of torment, will be this coming to themselves, when too late for repentance.
Mark 3:29 (KJV) But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

VII. Heaven is as wonderful as hell is so terrible.
We have a loving God who has paid for our redemption and salvation with His own Life and Blood on the Cross and because He lives we can live also.
  A. He has shown us the way.
  - John 14:6 (KJV) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
  - Romans 10:13-16 (KJV) 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
  B. Our responsibly is to first be ‘Born again’ by receiving Christ as their personal savior.
    1. Then tell the world the Gospel so they can be saved.
      a. Saved from what? Saved from our sins and hell itself.
      - Mark 16:15-16 (KJV) 15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
No one who is ever in hell will be able to say to God, "You put me here," and no one who is in heaven will ever be able to say, "I put myself here." John Hannah.

SALVATION, Plan of
The Roman's Road to Salvation has been a traditional way of leading persons to faith in Christ for many years. Here is a brief outline of that plan.
  1. Every human is a sinner. Romans 3:23
  2. God's penalty for sin is death. Romans 6:23
  3. In His great love, God has made provision for the salvation of sinners. Romans 5:8
  4. Each person must put his trust in God's Son, Jesus Christ. Romans 10:9-10, 13
